Most individuals who cycle in and out of jails and prisons have unmet physical and behavioral health conditions. As such, the justice system represents an important access point for Medicaid enrollment. 

CHJ offers information for public safety leaders, state Medicaid agency personnel, and policymakers who work on issues related to criminal justice and behavioral health. For instance, we developed a series of briefs describing the key components of a seamless system of care for individuals being released from jail or prison with medical and/or behavioral health conditions, and in order to support and inform efforts to build bridges to care between correctional and community healthcare systems.

We continue to monitor, advise and advocate for healthcare policy that will enhance the ability for individuals entering or leaving justice and correctional systems to receive the medical and behavioral health services they require to maintain stability in the community.
